Several prominent progressive activists — particularly Hollywood types, including Alyssa Milano — have pledged not to speak ill of any presidential candidates during the 2020 campaign. There’s just one problem: they seem to have forgotten that President Donald Trump is, technically, a candidate for president in 2020. The “pledge” trend took root on Saturday when another vocal progressive, former Star Trek star George Takei, tweeted a sample of his own oath to say nothing negative about anyone running for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2020. The impetus behind Takei’s pledge is, of course, that there’s no need to give Trump or his team any further ammunition against Democrats by leveling pre-emptive campaigns against specific potential nominees. “Will you join me in pledging not to speak negatively about any of our candidates? A retired judge seeking the appointment of a special prosecutor to investigate exactly what lead Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx’s office to drop charges against “Empire” actor Jussie Smollett has subpoenaed Foxx, her chief deputy, and Smollett to appear at a hearing to discuss the case. The Chicago-Sun Times reports that retired Cook County appellate judge, Sheila O’Brien, filed a petition last week demanding that a special prosecutor be appointed to investigate Foxx’s office. O’Brien’s filings included a subpoena demanding Foxx’s presence at a hearing to discuss the potential appointment. In addition, O’Brien is seeking to compel the appearance of Foxx’s deputy, Joseph Magats, who was the public face of the “plea deal” Foxx’s office brokered with Smollett, and Smollett himself. Last Thursday, a 26-year-old New York State man who admitted to raping a 14-year-old girl he met while driving her school bus escaped jail time time during his sentencing hearing. Shane Piche, who pleaded guilty to third-degree rape in February, was sentenced to 10 years’ probation by Judge James P. McClusky and will now have to register as a Level 1 sex offender, reported The Watertown Daily Times. “A Level 1 sex offender is considered to be at low risk of committing the crime again and is not included in online sex offender databases,” noted the outlet.
