Hobby Lobby, Nordstrom, Bed Bath & Beyond Have Chosen to Stay Closed on Thanksgiving

These past few several years there has been a trend for some major stores like Macy’s, Target and Walmart to work on Thanksgiving Day so they can compete with the changing retail landscape for Christmas sales.

Happenings like “Cyber Monday,” the first Monday after Thanksgiving when people have returned back to work and are maybe more motivated to spend their time shopping online, purchasing things before the Christmas shopping season, have ruined the Black Friday turnout.

However, many retailers this year have decided to stay closed on Thanksgiving Day.

Among the many retailers who are keeping their doors closed are Christian-owned arts and crafts store Hobby Lobby, Bed Bath & Beyond, Nordstrom, and Barnes & Noble.

Hobby Lobby is well-known for its traditional values, this is one of the few huge retailers who willingly chooses to be closed every Sunday.

The company issued a statement on its website:

“We have chosen to close on the day most widely recognized as a day of rest, in order to allow our employees and customers more time for worship and family. This has not been an easy decision for Hobby Lobby because we realize that this decision may cost us financially. Yet we also realize that there are things more important than profits. This is a matter of principle for our company owner and officers.”

When asked about why they’ve decided to remain closed until Black Friday Bob Miller, the company communications coordinator, said:

“It has always been the practice of the Hobby Lobby to remain closed on Thanksgiving to allow employees to spend time with their families and to enjoy the day together. The owners of Hobby Lobby believe strongly in the importance of family.

“For that reason, we do not anticipate this policy ever changing,” he continued.

Upscale department store Nordstrom had similar views, Senior Fashion PR Specialist Anya Pavlovic stated:

“Our stores have always been closed on Thanksgiving so that our employees can spend time with family and friends. Customers who want to shop with us on Thanksgiving can visit Nordstrom.com, NordstromRack.com and HauteLook.com.”

Even though, or maybe because of the decision to stay closed on Thanksgiving, Nordstrom’s profits for 2016 “exceeded expectations.” The similar happened to Hobby Lobby.
