NJ Woman Raises More Than $21,000 for a Homeless Man who Gave Her His Last $20

Kate McClure, a 27-year-old from New Jersey, was driving to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in October when along to road she ran out of gas.

She pulled over to the side of the road and got out of her car and started walking towards the nearest gas station when one homeless man approached her and told her to get in her car and lock the doors.

After a short time, Johnny Bobbitt Jr., 34, came back with a can of gas and poured into her car.

McClure didn’t have cash to gave him, so she promised she will return the favor. The next several weeks she came back to the area with food, money, supplies and gift cards for the man who showed her kindness.

Bobbitt offered her to share one of the cereal bars she brought him and said that he is excited to take the goods she gave him and share it with the “the guys.”

Every time she passed through the area she and her boyfriend, Mark D’Amico, were learning more and more about the good Samaritan. He was homeless for about a year.

Everything started with one night on the street and then turned into weeks which turned into months. During that time, he met few other homeless men and they are looking after each other ever since.

Bobbitt is a former paramedic who came to Philadelphia to work but things got complicated and after some time he ran out of his savings.

Leaving on the street Bobbitt lost his VA paperwork form being in the Marine Corps and his ID, and he didn’t have money to replace the lost documents.

The couple was stunned how quickly things took the wrong turn and Bobbitt ended up on the streets.

“It’s crazy, you can relate to that,” McClure told NJ.com, “You look through and think, ‘that could be me.’”

The couple wanted to do more in order to help him so on November 10 they created a GoFundMe page and set a goal of $10,000.

When they raised $1,700, the two of them surprised Bobbitt with a bottle of champagne and the good news. “That changes my life, right there,” he said, “I’ve honestly met more good people than bad.”

Now Bobbitt is the process of replacing his lost paperwork. He hopes to start working in the near Amazon warehouse and eventually to recertify as a paramedic.

McClure and D’Amico goal has been reached and even doubled, the couple raised over $21,000 on Bobbitt’s behalf form sharing the page on the social media.
