A 13-Year-Old Asked Sanders a Question — Her Response Showed Raw Emotion

On Wednesday, press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders fielded a question by Time for Kids reporter, 13-year-old Benje Choucroun, and she got teary-eyed as she delivered her response.

Towards the end of the briefing, Sanders called on “the young colleague in the back,” and expressed her hope that his question wouldn’t be as tough as the ones on “Bring Your Kids to Work” day.

Choucroun explained that his school recently had a lockdown drill and the possibility of having a shooter in the school is an issue that affects him and other kids nationwide.

“Specifically, can you tell me what the administration has done and will do to prevent these senseless tragedies?” he asked.

Sanders, a mother of two herself, began to deliver a strong answer, which quickly gave way to a shaky voice and clear tears starting to form in her eyes.

“I think that as a kid and certainly as a parent there is nothing that could be more terrifying for a kid to go to school and not feel safe,” she said.

The press secretary apologized that he feels worried or scared to go to school and explained that President Donald Trump’s administration “takes it seriously.”

She shared that the school safety commission, which Trump convened, is meeting again this week to discuss the issue.

Sanders added that the meeting will be used to figure out how “we can do every, single thing within our power to protect kids in our school and make them feel safe and make their parents feel good dropping them off.”

After the emotional exchange, the press briefing went back to business as usual as Sanders fielded a question about Disney CEO Bob Iger and any conversations that occurred about ABC canceling “Roseanne.”

The issue of school safety and gun control heated up following the Feb. 14 massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

Trump hosted a listening session with people, who have been affected by gun violence, including those from Parkland, Florida. However, since, he — and the entire GOP — have faced backlash for not doing enough to prevent shootings.
