Legendary Marine Behind Iconic Photo From Iraq Retires and Gives the Most Badass Speech About America
During Monday’s Memorial Day game, one Atlanta Braves fan used his own umbrella to repeatedly shield the military member who was standing watch over the dedicated POW/MIA seat at the stadium.
Michelle, whose husband and brother both currently serve in the military, attended the game and told Independent Journal Review that the simple gesture was enough to bring tears to her eyes.
From the moment she arrived at the game, she had “goosebumps,” and was already getting teary-eyed.
When it started raining, she turned around to check on the Marine standing at the seat, which is when he saw the man with his umbrella.

“It was just to my shock and disbelief that someone was making sure he was OK,” she explained. “Once I saw that there were just tears in my eyes. It was an unbelievable moment to witness.”
While her photo only captured one moment, she told IJR that every time it started drizzling, he’d get up from his seat and “continued to protect each person,” standing over the chair.
“It could have been 15 minutes. It could have been five minutes. It could have been one minute,” she said.

Michelle has been at other Memorial Day Braves games and she said that every year they “amaze” her at their continual displays of respect for service members.
“At one point they asked for a moment of silence and you could hear a pin drop,” she explained. “It’s our military, if it wasn’t for them we couldn’t be doing the things that we do today. The Braves do everything they can to recognize that.”
As far as the picture of the man, whose name she regrets not finding out, Michelle told IJR that it can “remind us all that we should respect everyone around us.”
“I think if we all do simple acts of kindness like that — whether for someone in a uniform or someone on the street — it could really change this country for the better,” she said.
