Viral Photo of Grieving Santa Fe Students Labeled ‘Racist’ — The ‘Victim’ and Her Mom Say Otherwise

A photo of Santa Fe High School students holding hands at an NBA game sparked cries of racism, but the girl in the photo who is African-American and her mom refuted the claim.

The nine girls were on the court for a moment of silence and to perform the national anthem before Game 5 of the Western Conference Finals between the Golden State Warriors and Houston Rockets.

The photo shows seven girls, six of whom are holding hands. It quickly went viral, and people were quick to point out that the girls in the photo aren’t holding hands with the one girl who is African-American in the photo.

However, the student, Nicole Janice, and her mother, Lynda, refuted the idea that there was anything racist about the photo and shared that it was actually Nicole’s choice.

During an interview with CBS affiliate KHOU, Nicole called it “disappointing” that people took a photo of “nine grieving girls” and made it about race.

“I grieve in my own different way. I don’t like to be touched,” she explained. “When we had that moment of silence, I didn’t want to grab anyone’s hands because I didn’t want to break down before we sang [the national anthem].”

She added that claims that her classmates refused to hold her hand are false. Her mother told KHOU that on Saturday morning, her daughter was upset that “they had turned this into a race thing because she knew what was real.”

“To make something so simple into a race issue was just absolutely ludicrous,” she explained.

A wider version of the photo also shows that the two girls on the end next to Nicole opted not to hold hands, either.
