DNC Chairman Tom Perez Introduces Obama at Fundraiser as the ‘Real President of the United States’

During a Democratic National Committee (DNC) fundraiser this week, DNC Chairman Tom Perez introduced former President Barack Obama, who was scheduled to speak at the event, as the “real president of the United States.”

“Let’s give it up for the real president of the United States,” Perez said as he called the former president up onto the stage to give his remarks.

The event was intended to boost support and finances for a DNC that is struggling ahead of the 2020 presidential election. It also highlighted the tension between those who wish to see Obama as a leader of the party and those who are ready to move on, according to Politico.

Perez apparently later attempted to backtrack by downplaying people he referred to as “political venture capitalists — they want to find the next Barack Obama” — who aren’t concerned with building and strengthening the Democratic Party itself.

During the same fundraiser, Obama revealed that he had attempted to persuade then-President-elect Donald Trump to rename and own Obamacare rather than repealing it.

“I said to the incoming president, ‘Just change the name and claim that you made these wonderful changes and I would be like, ”You go,“’” he said. “Because I didn’t have pride of authorship, I just wanted people to have health care.”

He also admitted that his biggest regret as president was keeping the focus too much on himself:

“I’ll be honest with you, if I have a regret during my presidency, it is that people were so focused on me and the battles we were having, particularly after we lost the House, that folks stopped paying attention up and down the ballot.”

While some Democrats may be trying to shift away from the party establishment, they’re finding it may prove difficult to win control of either the House or the Senate during midterms without his help.

“Notwithstanding his post-partisan rhetoric, Democrats need him, his inspiration, his energy and his memory to get through these dark days,” Eric Bauman, the California Democratic chairman, said, according to Politico.
