Reporter Who Falsely Claimed Maryland Shooter Wore MAGA Hat Resigns Over ‘Stupid, Regrettable Tweet’

A Massachusetts-based reporter was fired after he sent out a tweet falsely claiming the Maryland shooter, who shot and killed five Capital Gazette employees this week, had dropped a “Make America Great Again” hat before he carried out his attack.

The tweet Conor Berry sent was false and deleted shortly after he posted it, but he had sent it shortly after the shooting occurred when many questions had so far been left unanswered:

It only took one day before The Republican announced Berry had resigned from his job as a reporter there.

“We need to be more vigilant than ever to be fair and accurate in a climate in which we are scrutinized and criticized,” Wayne Phaneuf, executive editor, said. “The Republican newspaper and our partners at MassLive.com are committed to report the news with the truth paramount.”

Berry also later apologized for the tweet on his Twitter account:

“I am ashamed of my tweet, which taints the good work of fair-minded journalists everywhere,” Berry also wrote in his resignation letter.

The shooting at the Capital Gazette newspaper office in Annapolis left five people dead with the shooter being taken into custody. President Donald Trump addressed the tragedy, calling it a “horrible event.”

“This attack shocked the conscience of our nation and filled our hearts with grief,” he said. “Journalists, like all Americans, should be free from the fear of being violently attacked while doing their job. To the families of the victims, there are no words to express our sorrow for your loss.”
