CA State Legislature Just Voted to Take Away the Right of Gun Ownership from 18-20-Year-Olds

The state legislature in California just voted to restrict the right to buy guns to those who are 21-years-old or older.

California, a state that already has strict gun control laws, voted on a bill that restricts the ability of those ages 18-20 from buying AR-15s or any other rifles.

The state already banned young adults from owning handguns. The bill, SB 1100, prohibits “the sale or transfer of any firearm by a licensed dealer, except as specifically exempted, to any person under 21 years of age.”

The author of the bill, state Sen. Anthony Portantino (D-Calif.) told ABC7, “As a dad and legislator, I am determined to help California respond appropriately to the tragic events on school campuses. It is imperative that California leads when Washington refuses to act.”

This isn’t Portantino’s only gun control legislation. He also proposed a bill that would limit the number of guns an individual can buy to just one per month.

Many saw this to be a violation of the rights of 18-20-year-old adults in California.

Opponents to the bill also noted that most school shooters are over the age of 21, voiding Portantino’s logic that this will prevent school shootings.

In addition to Sen. Portantino’s bill, there are many state legislators who are in favor of bills that restrict gun access. There have been multiple that were proposed or recently passed in California:

.All semi-automatic weapons are now legally called “assault weapons.” All “assault weapons” must be registered by the state, as of June 30, 2018.
.All detachable magazines that hold ten or more rounds were banned, but a gun-rights group took the law to court, delaying the law from taking effect. The Ninth Circuit will decide what happens from here.
.Gun owners cannot have ammunition sent to their home. They must buy it from a licensed dealer.
.Gun owners must clear a background check to buy ammunition starting in 2019.
.Gun owners cannot bring ammunition across state lines.
As far as the most recent age restriction, there are a few exceptions to the law. If a young adult has a valid hunting license, is a police officer, or active in the military, they are allowed to purchase weapons.

The age restriction isn’t the law, yet. It must first be signed by Governor Jerry Brown (D-Calif.), but it is extremely unlikely that he would prevent this bill from becoming law.
