Hurricane Harvey hit Texas on Saturday, taking lives and leaving hundreds of thousands without power. Once the storm downgraded to Tropical Storm Harvey, even more damage was done, bringing in unprecedented flooding and raising the death toll to eight, a number expected to rise. In Houston alone, an estimated 30,000 will be forced to flee their homes and seek shelter; 450,000 others will require some sort of disaster assistance. But, in response, the resilient and courageous people of Texas have sprung into action. The state has witnessed inspiring examples of heroism and unity from its citizenry — including teenage boys with nothing more than a small fishing boat and a paddle board. Seventeen-year-old Thomas Edwards and his three friends, Richard Dickason, 17, Liam Connor, 17, and his brother Declan Connor, 15, were some of those heroes. Not expecting to witness two heart-wrenching sights in a row, she grabbed her camera ready to film it all. She first noticed the weather, which was somewhat alarming. The heavy rain made for difficult travels even for those in a vehicle, but this man she saw was out trying to get home in a wheelchair. The electric wheelchair, like any other, can only go to a certain speed which was certainly not fast enough to take him to safety, yet there was a kind stranger who took notice. The University of Tampa has fired the left-leaning professor who said Texas “deserves” Hurricane Harvey because the state voted for President Trump; releasing a statement on social media that confirmed the instructor has “been relieved of his duties.” The University posted the statement on its official Facebook page, saying the institution “condemns” Kenneth Storey’s comments and that he would no longer be teaching at the college. “On Sunday, Aug. 27, visiting assistant professor of sociology Kenneth Storey made comments on a private Twitter account that do not reflect UT’s community views or values. A woman who was rescued from Hurricane Harvey after 36 hours went off on CNN for trying to interview her on camera while she was with her children. The mother began the interview by explaining how long she had to wait to be rescued, but was becoming visibly upset and anxious by having to share her story to the CNN correspondent. A sociology professor at the University of Tampa published a tweet on Sunday afternoon suggesting that Texas residents deserve the death, destruction and suffering caused by Hurricane Harvey because a majority of Texas voters supported Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential election. The professor is Kenneth L. Storey, reports Campus Reform. “I don’t believe in instant Karma but this kinda feels like it for Texas. Hopefully this will help them realize the GOP doesn’t care about them,” Storey wrote in one tweet.
