Florida Students Walk Out of Class to Show Support for Second Amendment

Rockledge High School students walked out of their Florida school on Friday to show their support for the Second Amendment.

According to Florida Today, sophomore Chloe Deaton and junior Anna Delaney organized the walkout to clear up misconceptions about the Second Amendment.

She added that it was important to ensure students with opinions different from the majority had their voices heard.

“It’s all over the news right now that all students hate guns. I wanted to show that not all students feel that way,” junior Zachary Schneider told Florida Today.

School administrators estimated about 75 students participated in the walkout, which began with the national anthem and “God Bless America.”

Delaney quoted former President Ronald Reagan and told students, “The Constitution does not say that government shall decree the right to keep and bear arms. The Constitution says ‘… the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.’”

The demonstration occurred weeks after students across the country participated in a 17-minute walkout in response to the Parkland, Florida, shooting.

Rockledge High School students who participated in the Second Amendment rally criticized the walkout because of how its message transformed into one about gun control.

“In the beginning, it started as a memorial to the Parkland students. And that’s how it should have stayed,” Deaton told Florida Today.

Second Amendment student activists carried signs that said “guns don’t kill people, people kill people” and “I support the right to bear arms.”

The event lasted about 20 minutes and then students returned to class.
