Trump Puts Crosshairs on California Gov. Jerry Brown for Pardoning ‘5 Criminal Illegal Aliens’
President Donald Trump criticized Gov. Jerry Brown (D-Calif.) for pardoning five former convicts who face deportation.
On Friday, Brown pardoned five men — Sokha Chhan, Phann Pheach, Daniel Maher, Daniel Mena, and Francisco Acevedo Alaniz. All of the men had previously been convicted of felony crimes and faced deportation.
According to KNBC, the pardon won’t automatically stop deportation proceedings, but the men will no longer have the convictions that federal authorities used as the basis for their deportation.
On Saturday, Trump tweeted about the “moonbeam” governor and wondered if the pardoning of “5 criminal illegal aliens” is what the “great people of California want.”
Governor Jerry “Moonbeam” Brown pardoned 5 criminal illegal aliens whose crimes include (1) Kidnapping and Robbery (2) Badly beating wife and threatening a crime with intent to terrorize (3) Dealing drugs. Is this really what the great people of California want? @FoxNews

Trump’s administration has regularly criticized “sanctuary cities,” including those in California, for their lack of compliance with immigration officials.
However, his classification of the pardoned men as “criminal illegal aliens” is, at least in part, incorrect.
According to KNBC, Chhan, Pheach, and Maher all hold permanent U.S. residency but had run out of legal avenues to fight their deportation.
Chhan was convicted in 2002 on two counts of misdemeanor domestic violence, and Pheach was convicted in 2005 of possessing drugs and obstructing a police officer.
“This is a life-changing, enormous event,” Anoop Prasad, an immigration staff attorney at Asian Law Caucus, told KNBC.
Chhan and Pheach face deportation to Cambodia, and Maher — who was convicted in 1995 of kidnapping, robbery, and being a felon in possession of a firearm — faces deportation to China.
Mena’s and Acevedo’s legal status and countries of residence have not been revealed.
KNBC reported Brown has issued 1,519 pardons as governor, including his first two terms from 1975 to 1983. His predecessor, former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, issued only 15.
