Florida Candidate Throws His Weight Behind Trump in Funny Video as Trump Becomes Important Factor in Midterms

Florida gubernatorial candidate and Rep. Ron DeSantis (R-Fla.) released a humorous video on Monday showcasing his enthusiastic support for President Donald Trump.

The video opened with DeSantis’ wife, Casey, jokingly referring to how her husband was more than just his connection to the president.

“He’s teaching Madison to talk,” Casey said. The video then showed a clip of DeSantis holding up a “Make America Great Again” sign for his daughter to read.

“Everyone knows my husband Ron Desantis is endorsed by President Trump. But he’s also an amazing dad,” she said.

Her message was followed by a video of DeSantis teaching his daughter to “build the wall” as she stacks toy bricks on top of each other.

Watch:

DeSantis certainly showed his support for Trump, but his video offered an exaggerated symbol of how Republicans clung to Trump during the 2018 midterm season.

Despite the many controversies surrounding Trump — Stormy Daniels, sexual harassment allegations, the Russia investigation, his summit with Russia’s Vladimir Putin, criticism over his tweets, and backlash over his trade agenda — Republicans seemed to glean that Americans still wanted Trump to “Make America Great Again.”

According to the Pew Research Center, a majority (60 percent) of voters saw Trump as a factor in their decision for 2018. That was the highest percentage of people to say that about a president since 1982.

While 34 percent said their vote would be against Trump, 26 percent said the opposite. A majority of Republicans (52 percent) also said their vote would be one for Trump.

So it makes sense that Trump would take a prominent role in midterm races, pledging to campaign six days a week within the last 60 days of the race.

Republicans may have also taken cues from Trump critics like Reps. Mark Sanford (R-S.C.) and Barbara Comstock (R-Va.) who lost their primary races this year.

In Alabama, Rep. Martha Roby (R-Ala.) lost in her primary after disavowing Trump over the infamous Access Hollywood Tape released at the end of last year.

According to The Hill, “Republicans have hitched themselves completely to the president, making primaries a competition over who can sound and act most like Trump.”

Although the Republican National Committee (RNC) doesn’t involve itself in primary races, it told IJR that Trump was the best draw they had for turning out voters in the general election.

“We’ve seen time and time again that there is no one better at turning out Republican supporters than President Trump,” RNC spokesman Steve Guest said. “We are confident that enthusiasm for the president and his pro-growth policies will propel our supporters to the polls this November.”

DeSantis’ video also comes just after Trump received his highest approval rating yet in The Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll. Trump also took credit for the booming 4.1 percent GDP growth rate revealed on Friday, a figure many predicted he wouldn’t reach.

Editor’s Note: This story has been updated to include a statement from the Republican National Committee.
