Ryan Gosling Defends Moon Landing Movie Omitting American Flag Being Planted: The Landing Transcended Borders

“First Man” is an upcoming biopic movie about famed astronaut, Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon. Despite not having been released yet, it is already being met with extreme criticism for not re-creating Armstrong planting the American flag on the moon.

Ryan Gosling, who stars as Armstrong and is a Canadian, defended the decision to not included the iconic moment, saying the landing had “transcended countries and borders,” according to the Telegraph.

Gosling also pointed to Armstrong’s humility when he was alive.

“I think this was widely regarded in the end as a human achievement [and] that’s how we chose to view it,” he explained. “I also think Neil was extremely humble, as were many of these astronauts, and time and time again he deferred the focus from himself to the 400,000 people who made the mission possible.”

“So I don’t think that Neil viewed himself as an American hero,” he continued. “From my interviews with his family and people that knew him, it was quite the opposite. And we wanted the film to reflect Neil.”

Armstrong and fellow astronaut, Buzz Aldrin, planted the flag as they made their first steps on the moon:

“I’m Canadian, so might have cognitive bias,” Gosling joked.
