House Cmte Rejects Dem Proposal to Remove ‘So Help You God’ From Witness Oaths — It Was a ‘Mistake’

The House Committee on Natural Resources voted on Wednesday to reject a controversial proposal that would have removed the phrase “so help you God” from witness oaths before the committee.

The proposal, which caught a flurry of media attention, was a “mistake,” according to Chairman Raul Grijalva (D-Ariz.).

As IJR previously noted, Republican Conference Chair Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) derided Democrats in light of the new proposal.

“It is incredible, but not surprising, that the Democrats would try to remove God from committee proceedings in one of their first acts in the majority,” she said. “They really have become the party of Karl Marx.”

Others blasted the proposal on Twitter:

As Fox News noted, the proposal also suggested removing the pronouns “his” and “her” and attempted to make the “chairman” title gender-neutral by changing it to “chair.”

It’s unclear what Grijalva meant when he called it a “mistake.”

The Democratic Party received pointed criticism in 2016 when, during its convention that year, some delegates pushed to remove references to God in the platform.

President Donald Trump has made a substantial push to include God in his rhetoric, saying things like Americans “don’t worship government, we worship God.” His administration also set up a religious liberty task force last year, reportedly proposed defining sex according to biological traits, and exempted religious organizations from the Affordable Care Act’s contraception mandate.
